Carl William Skinner Dec. 10, 1935-Mar. 19, 2014 Slate Hill, New York Carl William Skinner passed away peacefully at home after a long illness at the age of 78 on March 19, 2014. He was born on December 10, 1935 to the late Frank Kenneth Skinner and Carrie (Hobart) Skinner-Bogart. He grew up on his parent's dairy farm on Ridgebury Road with his older brothers Roy & John. When his father died when he was 18 months old, his mother married Vincent James Bogart and ran the former Sunset Haven Rest Home for many years. Carl was a graduate of Carson Long Military Institute in New Bloomfield, PA where he earned the rank of Captain and was the editor of the school newspaper He went on to nursing school at the Middletown State Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1956 as a registered nurse. He met Phyllis Johnson while attending nursing school in NYC and on July 1, 1956, made her his wife. For the next 57 years, he loved her with all of his heart. Carl worked at the Middletown State Hospital and quickly started a family, having James, Wayne, Karen, Mark and Todd. In 1966, at the age of 30 with 5 children, he was drafted into the United States ARMY and he was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC as a 2nd lieutenant and being discharged in 1968 with the rank of Captain. He came home and enlarged his family having Stacey. While raising his family, Carl learned to fly and held Private Pilot Class 3 License for small planes. He continued working at the Middletown Psych Center as the evening supervisor nurse of Tuckerman Hall until his retirement after 40 years of service. After retirement to stay busy, he was appointed on 2000 to the Town of Wawayanda Zoning Board of Appeals and was a member until 2010. He was a member of the American Legion Post 151. Carl was always building or repairing something around his home which he built himself and took 7 years in the making. He was always around for his children and taught them to respect and help each other. Carl told them to be proud of the Skinner name and that if it is ever tarnished, it's hard to bring back. Carl leaves behind his beloved wife Phyllis at home; his sons: James & his wife Laurie of Slate Hill; Wayne & his wife Karen of Slate Hill; Mark & his wife Maureen of Clifton Park, NY; Todd of Slate Hill; his daughters: Karen Doll & her companion Ben Pearce of New Hampton; Stacey & her fiancé John Cusick of Cuddebackville, NY as well as 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 1-3 PM on Saturday March 22, 2014 at the Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home, Inc. 72 West Main Street Middletown, NY. A Funeral Service will be held with military honors on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 3 PM at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties; a local animal shelter of one's choice or Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Co. in Slate Hill, NY.
