Matilda Schaper

November 5, 1924 — February 7, 2017

Mrs. Matilda Schaper of Goshen, New York and long term resident of Orange County passed into the loving arms of her savior on February 7, 2017 at Elant, Goshen New York. Matilda was 92 years of age. She was born November 5, 1924 in Midland Park, New Jersey the daughter of the late Nicholas Osinga and the late Susie Osinga (De Roo). AGreat Depression era child, her parents moved her and family from Midland Park to Goshen then later to Chester/Sugar Loaf. Their move in 1932 established her family as first generation Orange County dairy farmers sharing hope for sustainable income and better life during hard times.While living in Goshen Matilda attended the one room School House on Lagrange Road. She was of the generation that walked to school and drank of hand pumped well water. Later while living in the Chester-Sugar Loaf Valley, Matilda married Leonard Schaper the son of the neighboring farmer down the road. Matilda was married to Leonard 63 years prior to his passing on February 13, 2006. She and her husband worked side by side in the Laroe Roadfields of the Chester, New York, Bull Family Homestead while raising three children; John, Robert and Susan. Matilda was one of the first members of the Goshen Christian Reformed Church, the daughter of founding elder, Nicholas Osinga. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will remember her with memories of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthday family gatherings. Matilda's happiest memories were of the farm she and her children lived on in the Valley East of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Surviving are her children; John Schaper and his wife, Jeanne of Spring Hill, Florida: Robert Schaper and his wife Ginny of Warwick, N.Y. and grandchildren; Julia Chiarot and husband, Justin of Goshen, N.Y, Mark Schaper and Karen Schaper of Warwick N.Y., great grandchildren; Leah and Judah Chiarot: Daughter Susan Stewart and husband Malcolm of Goshen, N.Y. and grandchildren; JasonStewart and Rebecca Stewart of Goshen, N.Y.. Also surviving Matilda is her sister, Marilyn VandeWeert of Nineveh, N.Y. Matilda was predeceased by her brother Samuel. A Family Service will be held at the Lippincott Funeral Chapel, Inc. Goshen N.Y. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 with interment at the Wallkill Cemetery. The family requests both service and internment remain private for those of her immediate family.
