Anna Zaraszczak of Chester, a former cleaning lady at Wall Street office buildings in Manhattan and a longtime resident of the area, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2017 at her home. She was 96. The daughter of the late AndreasLaszkowecka and Maria Pluta, she was born on February 26, 1921 in the Sambir region of Ukraine. She lived a proud and adventurous life from the Ukraine to Germany to Brazil and became the first generation of her family to immigrate to the U.S. in 1962. There were many stories over the years of her life growing up in Ukraine, during WWII as an Ostarbeiter in Germany, then the boat ride to Brazil where she lived for almost 15 years and finally to America which was always the long-term goal for Anna having witnessed the generosity and caring of America through the American Red Cross post-war in Germany. Anna was truly an amazing woman that enjoyed a good joke and a hearty laugh and who was greatly loved and respected by friends, acquaintances and family during her long years of life. When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she replied: “…that I was tough”. She was the widow of Danylo Zaraszczak. Survivors include her son Walter Zaraszczak and her daughter Irene and life partner Sam Cuttler. Her grandchildren Joseph Zaraszczak and his wife Michaela; Keith Zaraszczak and his wife Jennifer; Eli Zaraszczak and his wife Petrina; Kevin Zaraszczak; Alison Conklin and Donna Babcock and partner Daniel. Her great-grandchildren Edward, Joseph, William, Michael, Adam, Petro, Brandon, Autumn, Mercades, Alyshia, Anna, Leah, Alexis, Madison, Jessica and Vinessa. Her two great-great-grandchildren Kelsea and Abigail. She was predeceased by her three siblings. Visitation hours will be held on Saturday May 13, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Lippincott Funeral Home, Inc. 92 Main Street Chester, New York. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday May 16, 2017 at 10 A.M. at St. Andrews Ukrainian Church 141 Sarah Wells Trail Hamptonburgh, N.Y. Burial will be in Holy Spirit Cemetery Hamptonburgh, N.Y.
